Pavement and Railway Insulation

The cycle of winter freezing and spring thawing of soil can affect transporta-tion facilities such as roads and railroads. This is because the ground surface heaves as a result of freezing and settles upon thawing. Thus the lifetime of the pavement section is reduced. The subgrade is weakened and this could be of safety concern for road, railways or airfields.
